Partner visas

Your partner is Australian.

If your partner is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, you can apply for a partner visa from the UK and live in Australia permanently.

Applying from the UK

The offshore partner visa (309/100) is lodged while you are outside Australia, and you must be outside Australia when the 309 is decided. It suits couples who will move together once it is granted.

If you are already in Australia on another visa, the onshore 820/801 may fit instead. Check your visa for condition 8503 (No further stay) first, and get advice before entering Australia as a visitor with a plan to apply onshore.

UK documents

Home Affairs usually asks for a police certificate from every country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years, if you are over 17. It must cover the time since you turned 16 and is treated as valid for 12 months. For the UK, that is an ACRO police certificate.

Health examinations must be done by a Home Affairs panel physician. The UK has approved clinics in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Plymouth and Maidenhead.

Not married? A de facto application usually needs 12 months of living together before you apply.

Not sure which partner visa fits? Compare the offshore 309/100, the onshore 820/801 and the prospective marriage 300.

Employer sponsored visas

You have an Australian job offer.

An Australian employer can sponsor you for the Skills in Demand (482) visa, with a path to permanent residence through the 186. We act for the employer and for you, so the whole application is in one place.

Skills in Demand (482) from the UK

  • Sponsored by an approved Australian business
  • At least 1 year of relevant work experience
  • No English test if you hold a UK passport
  • Skills assessment if your occupation needs one
  • Salary at least the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) and the market rate

Already on a working holiday?

  • UK passport holders can apply up to age 35
  • Up to three 12-month working holiday visas
  • No regional work needed for the second or third visa since 1 July 2024
  • A working holiday lets an employer get to know you before sponsoring you

FAQ

Questions from UK clients.

Do I need to come to Australia to get started?

No. We act for UK clients entirely by video call, phone and email, and you upload documents online.

Do I need an English test?

Not for the 482 if you hold a UK passport. Partner visas do not have an English test either.

Can I apply for a partner visa while visiting Australia?

Sometimes, through the onshore 820/801. It depends on the conditions on the visa you enter on and on what you declared when you applied for it. Talk to us before you travel.

How long is my ACRO certificate valid?

Home Affairs treats police certificates as valid for 12 months from the date of issue. We tell you when to order it so it does not expire before the decision.

Can my employer sponsor me before I arrive?

Yes. The business applies to become a sponsor, nominates the role, and you apply for the 482 from the UK.

Looking for a migration agent? How is a lawyer different?

Registered migration agents are licensed by the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority. Immigration lawyers hold a practising certificate, owe duties to the court and can advise on any area of law that affects your visa. Advice from a lawyer is also covered by legal professional privilege.

General information only, current at 15 October 2026. Not legal advice. Police certificates and medicals: Home Affairs services outside Australia.
