Partner visas in Queensland
What's different in Queensland.
Registering your relationship
Queensland has a relationship register: the Queensland civil partnership register. Queensland calls it a civil partnership, and it counts as a registered relationship for a partner visa. At least one of you must live in Queensland, and there is a 10-day cooling-off period.
A de facto partner visa normally needs 12 months of living together before you apply. A registered relationship removes that requirement, but it does not prove the relationship is genuine. You cannot register if either of you is still married to someone else.
Supporting statements
Friends and family who know you as a couple complete Form 888. Since July 2023 it is a supporting statement, not a statutory declaration, so it does not need a JP or any other witness. Each person must be 18 or over and attach proof of identity.
If you also need a Commonwealth statutory declaration, the national witness list applies. In Brisbane you can find a JP through the Queensland Government.
Only one of you on the lease? We show the shared household another way: bond records, utility accounts, the agent's correspondence and mail to the same address.
Employer visas in Brisbane
Brisbane roles and regional Queensland.
Metropolitan Brisbane is not a designated regional area. The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, an hour away, are.
Roles in Brisbane
- Skills in Demand (482): salary at least the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) and the market rate
- Employer Nomination (186): permanent residence, directly or after a 482
- The 494 is not available for a role in metropolitan Brisbane
Roles in regional Queensland
- Category 2: the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast
- Category 3: Toowoomba, Cairns, Townsville and the rest of regional Queensland
- The role must be performed in a regional postcode, not just the business address

FAQ
Questions from Brisbane clients.
Do we ever need to meet in person?
No. We act for Brisbane clients entirely by video call, phone and email.
Is a Queensland civil partnership the same as a registered relationship?
For a partner visa, yes. A civil partnership registered in Queensland lets a de facto couple apply without first showing 12 months of living together. It still has to be a genuine relationship.
Our business is in Brisbane. Can we use the 494?
Not for a role performed in metropolitan Brisbane. A 482 leading to a 186 is usually the pathway.
We have a second site on the Gold Coast. Does that help?
It can. The Gold Coast is a Category 2 regional area, so a role genuinely based there can be nominated for a 494.
Looking for a migration agent in Brisbane? How is a lawyer different?
Registered migration agents are licensed by the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority. Immigration lawyers hold a practising certificate, owe duties to the court and can advise on any area of law that affects your visa. Advice from a lawyer is also covered by legal professional privilege.
Does Form 888 need to be witnessed by a JP in Brisbane?
No. Since July 2023, Form 888 is a supporting statement, not a statutory declaration, so no JP or other witness is needed. Any adult who knows you as a couple can complete one and attach proof of identity. If you need a Commonwealth statutory declaration for something else, The Queensland Government lists JPs near you.
General information only, current at 14 October 2026. Not legal advice. Regional areas: Home Affairs postcode list.
